The long weekend is approaching so why not take part in Clean Up Australia Day in the City this Sunday and receive a FREE swim at the Aquatic Centre and a FREE BBQ lunch?

This Sunday 7 March marks the 20th anniversary of Clean Up Australia Day so the Adelaide City Council is encouraging people to join in with this year’s clean up starting from 8.30am outside the Aquatic Centre.

Deputy Lord Mayor Michael Henningsen said the Adelaide City Council has proudly supported Clean Up Australia Day since 2004 as it is a great community event.

“Clean Up Australia Day helps to raise awareness about litter reduction and recycling as well as strengthening community pride. Last year we had more than 60 volunteers help with the clean up but this year we are hoping to get at least 100 people along.”

“To thank all the volunteers who participate in Clean Up Australia Day in the City on Sunday we are offering a free swim at the Aquatic Centre and a free BBQ lunch,” said the Deputy Lord Mayor.

Adelaide City Council Clean Up Australia Day project manager Warren Bourke said a huge amount of rubbish was picked up last year.

“In 2009 more than 60 bags of rubbish weighing 1500 kilograms was picked up by volunteers. The rubbish we collect from the Park Lands is always sorted and a lot of it recycled ensuring the cleanliness of the City is maintained.”

“Every year we get a number of school children, backpackers, local residents, City workers and visitors coming to take part in Clean Up Australia Day. We hope this year we get the same cross section of the community take part in what is a great event,” said Mr Bourke.

This year Clean Up Australia Day in the City will be held in North Adelaide - Park 2, Padipadinyilla. Volunteers are being asked to meet outside the Aquatic Centre at 8.30am.

Note: Hats, gloves, water and sunscreen will be provided for the event. Please wear closed toe shoes.
