Health Services

With the greatest concentration of research institutions, major hospitals and specialists, the City of Adelaide is the best place in the State to operate a business in the health sector.

The north-west corner of the City is another area expected to evolve as a medical hub with the State Government's new $1.7billion Marjorie Jackson Nelson Hospital announced as part of the 2007/2008 State Budget. The hospital is set to provide a world class health service and training facility for the state and is due for completion by 2016.

The Florey Innovation Precinct, centred on North Terrace and Frome Road, provides an extraordinary concentration of health services, medical training and medical research activity in the heart of the City.

The precinct includes institutions such as the University of Adelaide, the University of South Australia’s School of Pharmaceutical, Molecular and Biomedical Sciences, the Institute of Medical and Veterinary Science, the Royal Adelaide Hospital and the Women`s and Children`s Hospital. With this cluster of major health assets, it is the obvious place to locate specialist services.

With its large range of commercial accommodation, the City provides significant opportunities for locating consulting rooms, biotechnology companies and complementary medicine, with easy access for staff and clients. The close proximity to research organisations and hospitals provides fertile opportunities for bioscience firms, while the opportunities for interaction between health professionals and researchers create a vibrant, innovative environment.

The City is also the ideal location to operate more general health services. With around 110,000 workers, 17,000 residents and 75,000 visitors daily, the City has the critical mass of people to support the viability and growth of such services.

It is also the place to operate services that do not rely on a local market. Its broadband capabilities make the City an ideal location for health informatics and diagnostic services.

Adelaide’s two oldest City-based universities have a history of project partnerships with industry and other research institutions, which have led to many breakthroughs and the successful commercialisation of products. This, and the creation of spin-off companies, assisted by organisations such as Bio Innovation SA, has made Adelaide attractive to potential investors and companies seeking opportunities in Australia.

The health and community services industry in South Australia is worth more than $3.6 billion annually and employs around 14,000 people. It has more than 100 export-orientated companies earning at least $90 million a year in exports, with new companies continuing to join the export market.

With the calibre of internationally renowned specialists such as Dr Bill Griggs (pictured), Director of the Royal Adelaide Hospital Trauma Unit, Adelaide stands out as the place to locate health services and rub shoulders with the best.
