Council Policy for Election Signs In Public Places

Council authorisation must be obtained prior to any signs being posted, affixed or erected on property under the care and control of Council. Refer to the complete Control of Election Signs Policy (PDF, 375Kb) for all terms & conditions and the application form.

Where Council authorisation is given, the following terms and conditions for signs must be complied with:

● For State and Commonwealth elections, signs may be erected from the day of the issuing of the writs to the close of polls on polling day
● For Local Government elections, signs may be erected during the period commencing 4 weeks prior to polling day until the close of voting on polling day
● Signs must be secure and maintained in good repair at all times
● Signs must not be self adhesive
● Signs cannot be placed in Rundle Mall
● Signs cannot be fixed to trees or shrubs
● Signs need to be a minimum of 2 metres and not more than 3 metres from the ground
● Signs should not exceed 1sqm and be limited to one sign per site/stobie pole/light pole
● Signs must not be illuminated or self lit
● Signs must not advertise any organisation other than a registered candidate
● Signs must include the name and address of the person authorising the material and the printer.
● Signs need to be removed within 48hrs after the close of voting
● All applicants needs to fill in an application form, as contained within the Appendix of the Policy (PDF, 375Kb).

Illegal Signs

Council is opposed to illegal signs as a form of advertising. If advice is received that signs have been affixed without Council authorisation or remain in place after the deadline for removal, the following procedure will be followed by Council staff:

● The relevant officer is to notify the organisation/persons by phone/facsimile, requesting removal of the signs within 24 hours. This request will be confirmed in writing to the organisation/person.
● If the signs are not removed within 24 hours, instructions will be given to immediately remove or paint over the offending signs and Council will charge the resultant cost to the parties responsible. Such evidence as deemed necessary, including photographs, will be gathered to enable Council to recover any costs.
● If evidence can be obtained of persons affixing the offending signs, this information will be referred to the relevant officer for possible legal proceedings.

Application For Authorisation For Election Signs

Any person wishing to make application for the authorisation of the Council to allow electoral signs to be posted, affixed or erected on property under the care and control of Council should download the document:

and read the complete policy document and print off a copy of the included application form then submit it to:

Make a written application addressed to the Council (as above), stating the required particulars and seeking authorisation to erect signs in accordance with Council policy.
