Those Turbulent Years

The Adelaide City Council commissioned history of the City of Adelaide. Titled Those Turbulent Years. A History of the City of Adelaide 1929 – 1979, the book draws on the extensive but until now largely unexplored documentary, oral history and photographic records held in the Council’s Archives to construct a history of the City of Adelaide unlike any other.

Written by well-known professional historian Rob Linn, Those Turbulent Years traces the host of tumultuous changes that shaped the City’s evolution.

It was an eventful time that saw huge changes taking place in the City’s cultural, social and physical landscape.

The book examines these changes against the backdrop of the lives of the men, women and children of Adelaide who lived through them – some in positions of power and influence, others more lowly.

These personal stories provide poignant cameos that highlight a world in the grip of depression, war and massive social change.

The author critically examines the Council’s part in presiding over this transformation in the City’s character. He explores the Council’s activities and achievements, its relations with successive State Governments and its role as an agent, and sometimes opponent, of change during this critical period in Adelaide’s history.

As a history book, it is fully documented and referenced yet it is a lively, entertaining and informative book that will appeal to any person interested in the rich tapestry that is Adelaide’s history.

The book costs $29.95 and is available for purchase from the Adelaide City Council Customer Centre, 25 Pirie Street, Adelaide, and the Adelaide City Archives, Topham Mall, off 56 Waymouth Street, Adelaide, or from most leading retail bookstores
