Fall In Love With Your Library This Valentine’s Day
| Released: 13/02/2012 |
Fall in love with your library this Valentine’s Day when Adelaide City Council launches Library Lover’s Week, a celebration of all things library.
Running from 14th until the 17th February, Library Lover’s Week encourages people to rediscover all that their library can offer and if you haven’t been into one for a while, you might be surprised by what you’ll find.
“As well as providing books to suit every possible interest, libraries are now interactive places where people can learn about the world, fire-up their imagination and connect with their community,” Lord Mayor Stephen Yarwood said.
“Modern libraries have embraced technology and are a great resource for people of all ages.”
During Library Lover’s Week, the City Council will be setting up an outdoor reading room in Victoria Square, providing a place to kick back and enjoy a range of activities and entertainment.
Open from 10am until 2pm, there will be giveaways, a library café, eReader demonstrations plus deckchairs and couches to relax in. You might even win a blind date with a book.
Special events include a meeting of the Teen Fiction Book Club on Tuesday at 11am who will be joined by the Lord Mayor as he recounts his favourite books and discusses the importance of reading in his life.
Also on Tuesday, celebrities including local identity Rob Kelvin, Lydia Laube, author of Behind the Veil, former chef turned writer Teri Louise Kelly and Adelaide resident and author Carol LeFevre will talk about their favourite books.
Wednesday will get crafty with a craft book swap and some colourful yarn bombing. There will also be a giant book sale so you can restock your book shelves and a barbecue for those looking to feed their stomachs as well as their minds.
A poetry slam will be the highlight on Thursday and on Friday, MasterChef contestant Callum Hann will launch his new book ‘The Starter Kitchen: Learn How to Love to Cook’. Adelaide DJ Alix Gannon will play some smooth tunes to add to the chilled-out vibe.
“The outdoor reading room will not only showcase what’s available at the library, it’s also part of invigorating our city spaces and bringing them to life,” Stephen said.
“Reading has played a fundamental role in my life and technology now gives us vast opportunities for reading. It’s all waiting for you to discover.”
