| Released: 07/02/2012 |
The River Torrens Lake reopens today after routine test results confirmed blue-green algae* levels have reduced below recommended guidelines.
Council will continue to monitor and test the river on a regular basis.
Signs warning the public against contact with the water will be removed and the Lake will be able to be used once again by institution / recreational rowers and paddle boat hirers.
Popeye Cruises and the Adelaide Gondola were unaffected by the closure.
* Blue-green algae (Cyanobacteria) is a naturally occurring organism that can be found in almost every terrestrial and aquatic habitat, from oceans to fresh water, bare rock to soil. In moderate quantities it is quite harmless however under certain conditions, such as high water temperatures, some types can begin to dominate causing algae blooms and can cause skin irritations to people who come in contact with the water. Symptoms caused by ingestion may include numbness of the lips, tingling in fingers and toes, and dizziness as well as abdominal pain, diarrhoea and vomiting.
