A new scheme by Adelaide City Council recognises the important role played by former businesses in the life of Adelaide, and Council is looking for your memories to mark the businesses that built our City.

About the Program
Adelaide City Council values the City’s history and is committed to conserving and promoting its significance to the community.
To help achieve this, Council has developed the Historic Business Recognition Program to acknowledge the important role played by former businesses in the life and economy of the City.
The Program highlights the range of commercial enterprises that once flourished in the City. From foundries and ironworks, coachbuilders, breweries and drink manufacturers to stock and station companies, hotels, theatres, small retail shops and department stores.
The Program is being implemented in stages, beginning in the area of earliest commercial development along Rundle Street, Rundle Mall, Hindley Street and the minor streets / laneways running off of them. The businesses of focus in this stage were established prior to 1870 and operated for 50 years or more.

Once a sufficient number of plaques have been installed, a walking trail brochure will be developed to assist their interpretation and to promote public awareness of the program.
