These specifications can be used by trades people and owners during the Development Approval process. Every project is different. Therefore, Council’s experienced Heritage Officers can provide the correct specification for each project, and provided tailored advice in relation to a particular building.

This guide aims to provide owners, consultants and contractors with sufficient information to understand what causes salt attack and rising damp and to diagnose and identify appropriate repairs for cases commonly seen in Australia.
This guide was prepared by David Young in conjunction with the Council of NSW, Heritage Victoria and the South Australian Department for Environment and Heritage and is available from our Customer Centre at a cost of $10.
» Maintenance and Repair of Older Buildings in South Australia (PDF, 1Mb)
This publication should find a broad audience among owners and custodians of older buildings. Although it makes particular reference to conserving heritage significance, the principles apply to all older buildings regardless of heritage status. The publication looks at the many elements of a building and the forces at work on it, and advocates timely maintenance as the best way to avoid costly repairs down the track.
