Bicycle Action Plan

The Adelaide City Council's Bicycle Action Plan 2011-2013 is an exciting move forward for current and potential cyclists.

The popularity of cycling is increasing significantly as people become more aware of the health, environmental and financial benefits cycling can provide.

Journey to Work data from the 2006 Census reveals that, for City workers, cycling has increased from 1.9% of total trips to 3.1% from 2001 to 2006. This is a 61.7% increase in cycle only trips since 2001. On an average weekday, approximately 3,200 people ride to the City.

The on-road bike lanes, off-road bike paths and the bike racks and lockers delivered by the Bicycle Action Plan will further strengthen the opportunities for people cycling to, from, within and around the City of Adelaide and its Park Lands.

A highlight of the first year of projects will be the construction in Sturt Street of South Australia's first Copenhagen-style bicycle lane - which positions the bike lane between the kerb and on-street parking.

The Bicycle Action Plan demonstrates Council's leadership and commitment to both sustainable transport and reducing greenhouse gas emissions in support of Council's aspirations for an accessible carbon neutral City.

Implementation of the Bicycle Action Plan will require approximately $3.05m over three years.

Aims

● Create opportunities for cyclists by completing the primary bicycle lane network by the end of 2011/13 and installing on-street and offstreet self-secured bicycle parking at key locations; and then
