Litter Reduction
To educate and assist all Adelaide City Council business precincts, the residential community and daily visitors to reduce the amount of litter entering the stormwater system and directly impacting on the Torrens Lake and environs.
The emphasis will be on the high risk areas of the City and North Adelaide and will include promotion in the areas of litter reduction, recycling, packaging including plastic bags and correct on site management. Champions will be created and milestones will be developed to enable Adelaide to be recognised as a leader in litter management.
1. Establishing and developing a litter management action plan, liaising with the boards and relevant departments within the Adelaide City Council.
* Auditing and analysing the Adelaide litter stream to identify appropriate intervention and litter reduction goals including specific litter contributors such as:
– Cardboard
– Cigarette butts
– Leaf litter
– Plastic bags
– Fast food packaging
– Polystyrene foam
* Identifying precincts of interest upon commencement of the project and utilising the selected precinct as the springboard into remaining areas i.e. East End, Hutt Street, Central Market, Rundle Mall
* Investigating and trialling opportunities to recycle and manage litter at outdoor public places and events.
* Liaising with the Adelaide Council Cleansing department to improve and develop efficient recycling and litter removal initiatives within Adelaide City Council for various business and community sectors.
* Promoting and encouraging the community to utilise Adelaide City Councils established recycling and litter minimisation initiatives.
* Undertake promotional activities including involving all media sources to promote the initiatives carried out.
2. Providing business and the wider community with relevant information promoting compliance with litter legislation and waste management initiatives.
3. Undertaking seminars and workshops related to individual industry sectors, in order to target groups with industry specific information rather than generic material.
4. Liaise closely with individual precinct groups and other stakeholders to self regulate and embrace the litter management program as their own.
5. Continuing to support the Eco Efficiency workshops delivered by the EPA for the business community and where possible assist EPA officers in improving the content of the workshops to enable business to benefit more.
6. Educating Council staff and Councillors on the reduction, re-use and recycling of litter created by council activities and their potential impacts on water courses and landfill.
7. Tying in where possible with the existing successful Stormwater Protection Project, utilising their established community links and local knowledge and business database.
8. Continuing to support, improve, and expand the Adelaide City Councils “Butt Out Bin” Initiative.
Note: ‘wider community’ includes Adelaide City Council residents, working individuals in the city and daily visitors.
Project Benefits to the Community
Through the education and assistance provided to the business and wider community, the project will be able to promote compliance with the relevant litter legislation. This will reduce waste material going to the landfill and minimise the amount of pollutants entering the stormwater system (Torrens and Patawalonga catchments).
